According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, in 2012 there were over 1.7 million new cases of breast cancer reported worldwide. The same year saw over half a million deaths due to breast cancer, around the globe.

Early detection is key to breast cancer survival. According to Dubai Health Authority, there is a 98% survival rate in cases where the cancer is detected in the initial stage, compared to a 27% survival rate if it’s detected in the advanced stage. This makes it crucial for women to be aware of the symptoms of breast cancer and realize the importance of regular check-ups.

The month of October sees a variety of events, fundraisers and drives all around the world, all aimed at increasing awareness about breast cancer. Similar events in the UAE address a wide range of topics, ranging from educating women about the symptoms and how to check themselves for anomalies, offering complimentary screening tests, raising funds for prominent charities and breast cancer research to sharing inspiring stories of breast cancer survivors.
