With Eid al-Adha just round the corner, many parents are wondering how to keep their children entertained and where to take them for the holidays.
Of course there is always the option of hopping onto a plane and taking a small vacation to perhaps Bahrain or UAE. But what if you are planning to stay in Saudi Arabia this Eid break? Fortunately, there are still plenty of activities you can enjoy with your children in Saudi Arabia. Below are a few ideas on entertaining you kids this Eid and spending some quality time with your family.
Planning a day out
With the weather becoming cooler over the last couple of days, visiting the corniche in Jeddah can be a pleasant experience. If you are a drive away in a nearby city, make a road trip out of it. With many families out and about, it will give your kids the opportunity to play with other children as well as enjoy paddling in the sea. You can even buy a few beach toys and build sand castles and collect rare shell varieties with them. Keep in mind though wearing bathing suits or sun tanning will not be an option in this particular public location.
Another activity you can enjoy at the corniche at the Jeddah corniche is camel rides. While many of you may have already experienced it, it’s always fun to try it out again and capture the look on your child’s face.
If your child is particularly fond of animals, visiting the Riyadh National Zoo can also be a good idea. The Zoo which is home to more than 1400 animals can become an educational experience for your kids. Find out some interesting facts on rare animal species there and read them out to your kids during the visit. As for access to the zoo, it is open to women and kids only during Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fathers can accompany their kids on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
An educational experience
If you are looking for more of an educational experience along with entertainment for your children this Eid, you have a couple of options. The Wanasa World Children Activity Center in Riyadh is one such place where children between the ages of 3 to 13 years can be challenged, entertained and educated at the same time. They provide a series of activities which include a coloring wall, laser tag, multipurpose center and glow in the dark mini golf. As for the cost of spending a day at the center, you can end up spending an estimate of SR 160 for an open day per child.
Besides activity centers, going to see historic sites is another educational activity you can enjoy with you family this Eid. Saudi Arabia has an abundance of historical places which include Mada’in Saleh, a pre-Islamic archaeological location with homes and tombs carved out into the mountains. Another historical site would be Al-Diriyah, an old city in the outskirts of Riyadh where the royal family once used to live in mud brick houses.
Saudi Arabia also has choices of Museums which children can particularly enjoy. One such example includes the Saqer-Aljazirah Aviation Museum in Riyadh. It showcases numerous airplanes part of the Royal Saudi Air Force heritage.
Almost every child loves a day out at the theme park. Not only is fun for children but adults can enjoy the thrilling rides as well. In Saudi Arabia, you have the option of visiting the Al Hokair Land Theme Park near the Riyadh International Airport or the Al-Shallal Theme Park in Jeddah. In fact the Al-Shallal Park boasts one of the largest double loop roller coaster in the region. Other attractions include an ice rink, amazon jungle ride and a European and Far East theme area. The entrance fee at park is SR 25 but if you wish to have unlimited access to all the rides, the ticket will cost you SR 55. Also kids under 5 years of age will enter for free.
