ATM card-holders in Saudi Arabia will now be able to withdraw cash in emergencies without actually using a card.

The National Commercial Bank and Saudi Investment Bank are the first banks in Saudi Arabia to implement this new service.

The maximum cash withdrawal without a card is SR 1,000.

Talat Hafez, Secretary-General of the Media and Banking Awareness Committee of Saudi banks, said: “The customer will be able to access his account without the ATM card through a specified secret code.”

The other 22 banks in Saudi Arabia are expected to follow suit soon.

The move follows a recent initiative by some Gulf banks to allow the use of national identity cards for financial transactions.
